Het waargebeurde verhaal van de Amerikaanse countrymuzikant en liedjesschrijver Guy Clark, zijn vrouw Susanna en hun goede vriend Townes Van Zandt. Guy worstelde met het schrijven van poëtische liedjes terwijl hij een gecompliceerd huwelijk met zijn vrouw in evenwicht hield. Zij schreef ook succesvolle liedjes en schilderde albumhoezen voor topartiesten. Townes kwam in een spiraal van zelfvernietiging terecht na het schrijven en uitvoeren van invloedrijke ballades. De documentaire volgt het drietal op hun reis van onbekendheid naar verering.
