In het Duitsland van 1945 wordt onder hevige bombardementen het huwelijk gesloten tussen Maria en Hermann Braun. Na twee dagen moet Hermann zich aan het front melden. Na de ineenstorting van het Derde Rijk zoekt Maria tevergeefs naar haar man.
