Op de vooravond van haar huwelijk ontmoet een jong meisje haar jeugdliefde, die inmiddels ook getrouwd is. Tevergeefs poogt zij haar gevoelens het zwijgen op te leggen, de stem van het bloed is echter sterker dan de rede. Maar de strijd tegen de vijandige of onverschillige buitenwereld is te ongelijk. Zij ziet geen andere uitweg dan de capitulatie in de dood.
