Heidi is opgegroeid bij haar moeder en heeft haar vader sinds haar zevende niet meer gesproken. Nu ze een jonge vrouw is, opgejaagd door de gedachten aan hem, keert ze terug naar Australië op zoek naar genegenheid. Op weg naar haar geboortestad wordt Heidi gedwongen om geld te verdienen door op straat op haar viool te spelen. Haar melancholische vioolspel krijgt de aandacht van de knappe sinaasappelplukker Michael die Heidi een lift aanbiedt. Aanvankelijk zijn ze beide op hun hoede maar een onverwachte verbintenis steekt al snel de kop op.
