Na een spontane zelfontbranding gaat inspecteur Hamilton op onderzoek uit, en ontdekt hij dat dit onder vreemde omstandigheden gaande zijn. Dr. Lyell, een van de bewoners van de flat waar de zelfontbranding plaatsvond, doet onderzoek op gevangene Gilmour. Ze geeft hem een middel met de naam BFND, dat het moet kalmeren.
