In het jaar 1915 is Helene Schjerfbeck een vergeten naam in de kunstwereld. Ze leeft met haar bejaarde moeder op het platteland waar ze het schildersvak nog steeds beoefent. Haar leven wordt weer op zijn kop gezet wanneer een kunsthandelaar haar vele kunstwerken ontdekt en het, voor de eerste keer in jaren, wil tentoonstellen. Wanneer Helene de beginnende schilder Einar Reuter ontmoet, ontmoet ze tevens de liefde van haar leven.
