Het is het jaar 1914 en Italië staat op het punt ten strijde te trekken. Een groep Noord-Europeanen heeft op Capri zijn plek gevonden om er zijn leven te slijten en er kunst te beoefenen. Het eiland heeft echter zo zijn eigenheid in de vorm van de jonge vrouw en geitenhoudster Lucia. De film schetst de ontmoeting tussen Lucia en de commune - met name de leider Seybu - en de jonge dorpsdokter Carlo.
