1972. David Staebler werkt als nacht-dj bij een landelijk radiostation in Philadelphia. Op een dag wordt hij door zijn broer Jason uitgenodigd om naar Atlantic City te komen omdat daar grof geld te verdienen is met vastgoedtransacties. Voor Jason is het leven één groot monopoly-spel. Niet voor niets wordt hij de koning van Marvin Gardens genoemd, één van de dure Atlantic City buurten op het originele spelbord. Jason heeft grote plannen: hij wil een eiland nabij Hawaï kopen en er een luxueus vakantiecentrum neerplanten.
