Deze biografische film geeft het leven van de bekende Engelse schrijver D.H. Lawrence weer. Naast zijn literaire werken komen ook zijn persoonlijke facetten aan bod. Zijn aparte verhouding met zijn vrouw, het feit dat hij ook op mannen viel en één van zijn belangrijkste boeken die jarenlang niet in Engeland mocht verschijnen maakten het leven van Lawrence niet altijd even gemakkelijk.
