Ralph Burton is een mijnwerker die enkele dagen vastzit als gevolg van een instorting. Wanneer hij er eindelijk in slaagt zichzelf uit te graven, realiseert hij zich dat de hele mensheid lijkt te zijn vernietigd door een nucleaire holocaust. Hij reist naar New York City om het verlaten te vinden. Terwijl hij daar een leven voor zichzelf opbouwt, is hij verbijsterd als hij uiteindelijk Sarah Crandall vindt, die er ook in slaagde te overleven. Samen vormen ze een hechte vriendschap tot de komst van Benson Thacker, die erin is geslaagd zijn kleine boot de haven van de stad in te loodsen. Op dit punt lopen de spanningen tussen de drie op, vooral tussen Thacker, die blank is, en Burton, die zwart is.
