Ruth Matthews is drie jaar bezig met de restauratie van een oude Maya tempel als haar man daar komt te overlijden. Ze keert, samen met haar 6 jaar oude dochter Sally en haar zoon Michael van 12, terug naar Noord-Carolina. Sindsdien weigert haar dochter een woord te spreken. Ruth wijt dit aan de dood van haar man en de plotselinge terugkeernaar Amerika. Maar als het stilzwijgen van Sally aanhoudt, en het meisje een wonderbaarlijke gave blijkt te hebben, besluit Ruth de hulp in te roepen van dr. Jacob Beerlander.
