Beth is onlangs vrijgelaten uit de gevangenis na een lange periode en wil wanhopig opnieuw contact leggen met haar zoon. Maar haar zus Gabby en haar man hebben de wettelijke voogdij van het kind overgenomen en zijn er niet van overtuigd dat ze klaar is om de voogdij te delen. Beth heeft geen relatie met de jongen, die haar 'tante' noemt en haar behandelt als een vreemde. Haar onrustige verleden schrikt potentiële werkgevers af dus werkt ze bij een nagelsalon terwijl ze haar pro bono advocaat oproept om te pleiten voor een betere voogdijovereenkomst. Misschien heeft ze gelijk, maar haar onstuimige persoonlijkheid dreigt haar voortdurend te veranderen.
