Als Schrijver Blake Morrison (Colin Firth) hoort dat zijn vader (Jim Broadbent) op sterven ligt, reist hij af naar zijn geboortedorp. Terwijl zijn vaders toestand verslechtert, kijken vader en zoon terug op hun onderlinge band. Op het ziektebed worden mooie en grappige, maar ook vervelende herinneringen van vroeger opgehaald. Dit blijkt echter niet altijd een aangename ervaring en sommige herinneringen blijken diep weggestopt te zijn.
