Bologna, 2002. De oppositie tegen de arbeidswet ontploft in de universiteiten. De moord op een rechter heropent oude politieke wonden tussen Italië en Frankrijk. Marco, een voormalige linkse activist, wordt beschuldigd van moord. Nadat hij beschuldigd wordt van de aanval wordt hij, dankzij de leer van Mitterand, voor 20 jaar verbannen naar Frankrijk. Gedwongen om te vluchten met Viola, zijn 16-jarige dochter, zal zijn leven, en van zijn familie die moet boeten voor Marco's verleden, voor altijd veranderen.
