Miss Lilly Moffat is geschokt door de werkomstandigheden in een Walese mijnstad. Als onderwijzeres tracht zij een school op te richten voor de lokale bevolking, maar haar huishoudster en haar dochter verzetten zich tegen haar plannen, evenals haar huisbaas die weigert haar toestemming voor een schoolgebouw te geven. Ten einde raad begint Lilly een school in haar eigen huis.
