Een kijk in het leven van de fotograaf Robert Mapplethorpe. In de jaren zeventig wordt hij beroemd door onder meer zijn portretfoto's en weergaven van bloemen. Mapplethorpe verkent intussen, tot dan toe, zijn onderdrukte gevoelens jegens mannen. Hij heeft kort een relatie met Patti Smith, maar zijn ambities dreigen zijn relaties te doen mislukken. Hij sterft in 1989 aan de gevolgen van aids.
Nee, helaas is Mapplethorpe nog niet beschikbaar op Netflix in Nederland.
