Rond 1900 behoort de familie Forsyte tot de rijksten van het Britse imperium en bewegen ze zich in alle toonaangevende salons van Londen. De trotse en arrogante Soames Forsyte (Errol Flynn) huwt de beeldschone pianolerares Garson, maar als de jaren van haar huwelijk voorbijtrekken, raakt zij gefrustreerd van Soames' goed bedoelde dominantie en dat leidt tot Victoriaanse overspeligheid. Ze laat haar oog vallen op de verloofde van haar nichtje June; Philip Bosinney.
