Avonturiers Harry (Peter Fonda) en Arch (Warren Oates) willen voorgoed neerstrijken in een verlaten oord in New Mexico en ze zoeken werk. Harry wordt op een ranch ingehuurd door zijn ex-vrouw Hannah (Verna Bloom), die hij zeven jaar daarvoor in de steek had gelaten, maar de loyaliteit tegenover zijn kameraad Arch is groot.
