Kukorica wordt als zuigeling op een korenveld te vondeling gelegd. Hij wordt door een boer gevonden en in huis genomen. Op jonge leeftijd werkt hij voor het boerengezin als herder. Wanneer hij zijn adolescentie bereikt, wordt hij verliefd op het weesmeisje Iluska, waarmee hij hoopt te trouwen. Maar zij leeft onder het juk van haar boze stiefmoeder. Wanneer Iluska en Kukorica elkaar op een dag stiekem ontmoeten ontsnappen enkele schapen. Hij wordt het dorp uitgejaagd door zijn meester.
