Een aantal studenten wordt op griezelige en gruwelijke wijze vermoord. Inspecteur John Brady wordt belast met het onderzoek in deze moeilijke zaak. Tot nu toe heeft het onderzoek nog niets opgeleverd. Brady krijgt een ingeving. Hij vermoedt dat de dader een man is die hij kent uit het verleden: de waanzinnige dokter Claude Le Sange. Hij is een kwaadaardig genie wiens theorie over de psychologische reactie van de mens, verdacht veel overeenkomst vertoont met de moorden. Alhoewel alle betrokkenen ervan overtuigt zijn dat Le Sange niet meer leeft, voelt Brady zijn dreigende aanwezigheid.
