De stervende Marie huurt de getalenteerde kok Henry Joseph Church in om voor haar en haar elfjarige Charlotte, a.k.a. Charlie, te koken. De regeling is voor een tijdsbestek van zes maanden, maar groeit uiteindelijk uit tot vijftien jaar, lang na de dood van Marie.
