Russell Durrell, advocaat en basketbalcoach van de plaatselijke school, staat in voor de opvoeding van zijn vijfjarige zoon Calvin nadat zijn vrouw Kate hem in de steek liet. Als Russell verliefd wordt op Beth Ward, de assistente van een dierenarts, duikt zijn ex-vrouw plots op. Ze wil meer tijd doorbrengen met haar zoon en besluit om een tijdje in hun dorp te blijven.
