Gunner deelt een bijzondere band met zijn zieke moeder die hem steunt in zijn creatieve bezigheden. Anders is de relatie met zijn vaak afwezige vader Amos. Wanneer de gezondheid van zijn moeder fel achteruitgaat, verdiept Gunner zich in de wetenschap en het bovennatuurlijke. Hij gaat op zoek naar een geneesmiddel. Met zijn rebelse vriendin Jo vertrekt hij naar een mysterieus bos.
