Santa Barbara, 1979. De vijftienjarige Jamie groeit op bij zijn alleenstaande moeder Dorothea in een groot pand waar verschillende huurders hun toevlucht hebben gevonden. Dorothea is 55 en duidelijk van een andere generatie, maar ze doet haar best om haar zoon te begrijpen. Hulp – ook bij de opvoeding – krijgt ze van Abbie en Julie, twee jonge vrouwen die een grote impact hebben op het leven van de gevoelige, slimme Jamie.
