In een kleine plaats in Pennsylvania wordt een tienerdochter van een 32-jarige vrouw vermist. Hierna is de vrouw op zichzelf aangewezen om haar kleinzoon op te voeden. In de jaren daarna moet ze diverse beproevingen doorstaan om het verlies een plaats te geven om zo uiteindelijk tot de langverwachte ontdekking van de waarheid te komen.
