Richard en Mildred Loving trouwen in 1958 en worden vervolgens gearresteerd en veroordeeld tot een jaar gevangenisstraf. Hen wordt verteld dat de straf vervalt als ze de staat Virginia verlaten. De enige reden voor dit alles is dat Richard een blanke man is en dat Mildred een zwarte vrouw is.
