Toen Warren Jeffs de leiding kreeg over de 'Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints' (FLDS), paste hij z'n dictatoriale en sadistische behoeften toe op een gemeenschap die kwetsbaar was voor exploitatie. De FLDS was al een paternalistische religie, met een geschiedenis van polygamie en kind-huwelijken, maar Warren wist deze praktijken nog verder door te drijven. Van polygamie tot 'geestelijk gerechtvaardigde' verkrachting.
