De gepassioneerd Broadway-regisseur Oscar Jaffe (John Barrymore) weet van een van zijn ontdekkingen, Lily Garland (Carole Lombard), een ster te maken. Vanwege Oscars alles overheersende gedrag vlucht Lily naar Hollywood. Nu zijn topattractie verdwenen is, gaat het met de carrière van Jaffe bergafwaarts. Bij toeval komt hij Lily weer tegen aan boord van de 20th Century Ltd., de trein van Chicago naar New York. Oscar trekt alles uit de kast om zijn voormalige ster een nieuw contract te laten tekenen.
