Een moordzuchtige en afgeleefde oude vrouw woont met haar gezin op een walnotenboerderij in Californië. In een opwelling maakt een reiziger genaamd Jodie een kort uitstapje naar de boerderij, waar hij Melissa, de spreekwoordelijke boerendochter, ontmoet en verliefd wordt. Jodie en Melissa groeien naar elkaar toe als Melissa de vreemde, duistere geschiedenis van haar familie begint te onthullen.
