Vier jongeren hebben zich bij de handige Jeff Patterson ingeschreven voor een tour door de bossen van Black Hills rond Burkittsville. Ondanks zijn dubieuze reputatie is zijn bedrijf een gat in de markt. Vlakbij het vervallen huis dat ooit toebehoorde aan de kindermoordenaar Rustin Parr, en waar de camera's en de filmblikken van de studenten zijn teruggevonden, slaan ze hun kamp op. Een nacht die verstrekkende gevolgen heeft. Donkere uren, waarvan de bizarre symbolen in hun huid gekerfd staan. Geen van hen kan zich de volgende ochtend echter iets van de gebeurtenissen herinneren. In het oude pakhuis van Jeff, aan de rand van Burkittsville, proberen ze deze nacht te reconstrueren.
