Op 17 oktober 1989 stond de derde wedstrijd in de World Series honkbal tussen de San Francisco Giants en de Oakland Athletics op het punt te beginnen, toen de grond onder Candlestick Park hevig begon te schudden. Er werd al lang naar deze veelbelovende wedstrijd uitgekeken. De twee sterrenteams zorgden voor een kleurrijke groep fans. Maar toen de aardbeving Loma Prietra van 6.9 op de schaal van Richter door het stadion rolde en voor dood en vernieling zorgde, moest honkbal naar de achtergrond verdwijnen en vormden de inwoners van de San Francisco Bay Area één front.
