1910. Áurea gaat wonen in een stadje in de duinen van de staat Maranhão in Brazilië. Haar enige vrouwelijke gezelschap daar is haar moeder Maria. Áurea is zwanger en vindt het vreselijk in het stadje. Ze wil weg, maar dat is bijzonder moeilijk dus hoopt ze nog het geluk te vinden in het plaatsje. Drie generaties lang volgen we Áurea, haar moeder, haar dochter en haar kleindochter.
