Huppert stopt op een regenachtige avond in 1961 bij een motel. Hij is zich er niet van bewust dat zijn arrogante gedrag bij een van de aanwezigen ondraaglijke herinneringen oproept. De motelmanager had namelijk een deel van zijn jeugd in een concentratiekamp doorgebracht.
