Michael Laemle groeit op in de jaren 50. Hij voelt zich bij zijn ouders niet op zijn gemak, vooral niet bij zijn vader. Hij heeft last van nachtmerries en hij vermoedt dat zijn ouders meer dan alleen hamburgers op de barbecue in de tuin bakken. Michael ontmoet Sheila en zij is de enige aan wie hij zijn gruwelijke vermoedens zou kunnen vertellen. Ondertussen krijgt ook de maatschappelijk werkster op school lucht van mogelijke problemen bij de familie Laemle.
