Tom Garfield is een Australische schrijver die succes heeft in Los Angeles. Dat is echter niet zonder de nodige offers gegaan. Zijn vrouw heeft hem verlaten, zijn dochter groeit op zonder hem en hij heeft een drankprobleem. Nu komt Tom echter terug naar Melbourne. Hij wil weer de controle over zijn leven krijgen en de vrouw terugwinnen van wie hij houdt.
