Privédetective Mattei vindt zijn vrouw dood in bed als hij thuis komt. Ze is gewurgd. Op de grond van de slaapkamer vindt hij een foto die vermoedelijk van de moordenaar is. Deze zet hem op het spoor van Laura, een society figuur die wellicht weet wie de moordenaar is. Maar ze wil niets vertellen en gaat ook niet naar de politie, totdat de moordenaar ook achter haar aan komt.
