In deze documentaire wordt het leven en werk van componist en tekstdichter Stephen Sondheim verteld aan de hand van zes nummers uit zijn omvangrijke oeuvre: 'Something's Coming' uit West Side Story, 'Opening Doors' uit Merrily We Roll Along, 'Send in the Clowns' uit A Little Night Music, 'I'm Still Here' uit Follies, 'Being Alive' uit Company en 'Sunday' uit Sunday in the Park with George. Sondheim vertelt over zijn creatieve proces, over de totstandkoming van verschillende musicals, maar ook over zijn jeugd en persoonlijke relaties.
