Berlijn, 1943. Terwijl iedere nacht de bommen vallen, gaat het sociale leven toch door. Op een concert ontmoet Lilly, getrouwd met een frontsoldaat en moeder van vier jongens (en om die reden onderscheiden met het 'Mutterkreuz'), de energieke Felice.
