Kerst 1183. De op leeftijd rakende Engelse koning Henry II regelt een bijeenkomst om zijn opvolger te benoemen. De volgende mensen komen bij elkaar: zijn intrigerende maar gevangen genomen vrouw, koningin Eleanor van Aquitaine; zijn maîtresse, prinses Alais, met wie hij wil trouwen; zijn drie zonen (Richard, Geoffrey en John), van wie allen troonopvolger willen worden; en de jonge maar sluwe koning Philip, Alais' broer.
