Als de 21-jarige Morvern Callar (Samantha Morton) op kerstochtend wakker wordt, vindt ze haar vriend met doorgesneden polsen op de keukenvloer. Haar vriend laat Morvern een walkman met een compilatiecassette na, een goed gevulde bankrekening en een door hemzelf geschreven boek op een floppy disk - met een adressenlijst van uitgevers. Morvern grijpt haar kans om haar leven weer op de rails te zetten. De stevige soundtrack met muziek van onder andere Velvet Underground is afkomstig uit de walkman van haar vriendje waar Morvern de hele film naar luistert.
