Cassandra Mortmain doet haar best om te overleven in een vervallen Brits kasteel. Haar vader is een schrijver die ooit succesvol was, maar nu al 12 jaar niets heeft geschreven en de rest van haar familie is een kleurrijk gezelschap dat Cassandra niet echt behulpzaam is. Wanneer de Amerikaan Simon Cotton en zijn broer arriveren, ziet Cassandra in hem haar redding.
