Julio, een jongeman uit de provincie, gaat naar Lissabon om daar als leerling schoenmaker te gaan werken. Ilda, een "modern" meisje dat als huishoudster in een dure buurt werkt, is één van zijn trouwste klanten. Er ontstaat een romance tussen de twee.
