Een regenachtige dag, een genegeerd stoplicht. Een meisje wordt van haar scooter gereden. Per ambulance wordt ze vervoerd naar het ziekenhuis waar haar vader chirurg is. Terwijl ze op de operatietafel vecht voor haar leven, kan haar vader niets anders doen dan wachten. Op de gang vult hij de stilte van haar coma met de onthulling van een pijnlijk geheim. In gedachten gaat hij terug naar de verpauperde buitenwijk van Rome waar hij de gehavende Italia ontmoette. Ondanks de tegenstellingen ontstond er tussen hen een verzengende passie die hem als man voorgoed zou veranderen.
