Vanaf het moment dat de 21-jarige Terry Fox in de vroege uurtjes van 12 april 1980 ingescheept is in St. John's, Newfoundland, is hij nooit zijn doel uit het oog verloren: hij wil elke dag 26 mijl lopen om zo Canada te doorkruisen. Dit om geld in te zamelen voor het onderzoek naar kanker. Terry noemt dit zijn 'Marathon of Hope'. Hij heeft echter maar één been en moet de marathon dus met een prothese lopen...
