Manic gaat over een groep jongeren op de jeugdafdeling van een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis in Californië. Lyle heeft op school iemand in elkaar geramd met een honkbalknuppel en heeft zijn woedeaanvallen niet onder controle. Op de afdeling, die vooral bevolkt wordt door emotioneel beschadigde kinderen uit rijke families, weigert Lyle aanvankelijk zich te laten meeslepen in het psychologische mijnenveld.
