Kapitein Will Bastion keert terug naar zijn volk, de Maori's van Ngati Kapuka om zijn vader, het stamhoofd te begraven. Will, onterecht uit het leger ontslagen, zal de leiding van zijn volk moeten overnemen. Het symbool van zijn gezag is een ceremoniele strijdknots. Hij voelt er niets voor en al spoedig raakt hij in conflict met zijn jongere rebelse broer, Kahu. De zaak verslechtert nog meer, als Will's 17-jarige dochter Ripeka ook op de begrafenis verschijnt. Als Kahu, gezeten op een witte hengst, met zijn aanhangers de begrafenis verstoort om de strijdknots op te eisen, raken de broers verwikkeld in een strijd die de toekomst van de stam zal bepalen.
