Het is 1952 en de strijd om het bestaan in Ierland is hard. Hoewel dit land buiten de Tweede Wereldoorlog is gebleven, is het arm en onderontwikkeld. Het naburige meer wordt leeggevist en elektriciteit is nog niet aangelegd. De hoop op de toekomst ligt in Amerika, dat in oorlog is met Korea.
