Achttien bepalende maanden in het leven van John Lennon en Yoko Ono in het begin van de jaren ’70 vormen de basis voor het intieme portret van Oscarwinnend regisseur Kevin Macdonald. Een uniek tijdsbeeld van een roerige periode, waarin een van de meest iconische koppels van de 20e eeuw zich vestigt in een flatje in Greenwich Village, New York. Ze dompelen zich onder in Amerikaanse televisie: van Vietnamverslaggeving en The Price is Right tot Nixon, Coca-Cola en The Waltons, zijn op zoek naar Ono’s verloren dochter Kyoko en maken in de VS een transformatie door. Een tv-item over de Willowbrook State School - voor kinderen met een verstandelijke beperking - leidt uiteindelijk tot het historische One to One benefietconcert in Madison Square Garden. John en Yoko traden daar samen op, waarbij ook Yoko Ono met Age 39 en het intense Don’t worry Kyoko ruimte krijgt voor haar eigen stem, als gelijke naast John Lennon.
