Een familie houdt zich schuil in Romeins Egypte. De zoon, die alleen bekendstaat als 'the Boy', wordt door een ander mysterieus kind aan het twijfelen gebracht en komt in opstand tegen zijn beschermer, 'the Carpenter'. Hij onthult daarbij inherente krachten en een lot dat zijn begrip te boven gaat. Terwijl hij zijn eigen kracht uitoefent, worden de jongen en zijn familie het doelwit van zowel natuurlijke als goddelijke gruwelen.
