In het holst van de nacht ontsnapt Nadira uit een bordeel in Delhi nadat ze een politiecommissaris dodelijk heeft neergestoken. De politie zit haar op de hielen en ze zoekt tijdelijk onderdak bij een Noord-Indiase gemeenschap van sekswerkers, waar ze de hindoeïstische naam Renuka aanneemt. Daar kruist ze het pad met Devika, een jong meisje dat gebonden is aan een religieuze traditie die haar veroordeelt tot een leven in de prostitutie. Terwijl hun band zich verdiept in een verboden romance, trotseert Devika haar tirannieke moeder en het onderdrukkende eeuwenoude systeem. Samen met Renuka onderneemt ze een gevaarlijke reis door een verraderlijk doolhof van geweld en wreedheid, in de hoop de wet te ontlopen en hun vrijheid te bereiken.
